Programmers Now the Job Most Vulnerable to Replacement by AI

One of the threats from advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is that human jobs will be replaced by machines. This threat is now being felt in the programming profession. This job has become the most vulnerable to replacement by AI. Programmer tasks such as coding, creating updates, and managing software are now increasingly being taken over automatically by AI. In the report, researchers identified which potential tasks could be automated by AI. They also compared this potential with real data on the use of the chatbot Claude by professionals in the current workforce. Anthropic concludes that AI adoption in the workplace is still far from its limits. The report also clearly maps out which professions are now beginning to be “colonised” by AI and which ones remain resistant to the threat. In general, in Anthropic’s report, the professions threatened by AI replacement are digital jobs that involve screen-based work. One of them is programmers, who rank at the top, followed by the full list. One interesting fact from this report is that the workers most vulnerable to being displaced by AI are actually from the highly educated and high-earning professional class. Data shows that workers highly exposed to AI are dominated by bachelor’s degree graduates (37.1 percent) and postgraduates (17.4 percent). Their average salary ($32.69 US/hour) is also much higher compared to workers not exposed to AI at all ($22.23 US/hour). Although the list above appears alarming, there is good news from this research. Up to the release of the report, Anthropic found no surge in massive unemployment figures, even among the most vulnerable professions. Therefore, the threat of mass layoffs due to AI does not seem to be a reality in the near future.
