Profile: Tom Lembong, Former Trade Minister Sentenced in Sugar Import Corruption Case

Remember Tom Lembong? The former Trade Minister and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) during the Jokowi era has now been sentenced to prison in a sugar import corruption case. Here is a look at his profile.

Thomas Trikasih Lembong was born on 4 March 1971. He served as Trade Minister (2015-2016) and Head of BKPM (2016-2019) under President Jokowi. Before entering government, Lembong had an extensive career in the finance and investment sectors.

Lembong spent part of his childhood in Germany before attending Regina Pacis school in Jakarta. After completing secondary school, he studied at Harvard University, graduating in 1994 with a degree in architecture and urban planning. However, his career took him into the financial services industry instead.

He previously worked at Morgan Stanley Singapore, Deutsche Securities Indonesia, the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (BPPN), Farindo Investments, and Quvat Capital. Lembong has also been associated with ownership of the Blitz Megaplex cinema chain.

Before becoming a minister, Lembong served as an economic adviser to Jokowi during his tenure as Governor of DKI Jakarta. He was also credited with writing several of Jokowi's viral speeches, including the famous "Game of Thrones" and "Thanos" addresses.
