Profile of West Lombok Regent and Facts of the KPK Sting Operation Case

The name of West Lombok Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini is widely known in West Nusa Tenggara, particularly in West Lombok Regency and Mataram City. He was named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in an alleged corruption case on Tuesday (21/7). Prior to becoming the Regent of West Lombok, Lalu Ahmad Zaini served as the President Director of PT Air Minum (PTAM) Giri Menang (Persero) since 2007. He later contested the 2024 regional election with his running mate Nurul Adha. The West Lombok Regent is recorded as a politician from the National Mandate Party (PAN). The KPK’s sting operation in the West Lombok area has drawn national attention. The anti-corruption body carried out a series of legal actions against officials, including arresting the West Lombok Regent and private parties suspected of involvement in bribery practices. The sting operation and arrests by the KPK were conducted on Monday (20/7). Of the 19 individuals detained, seven were flown from West Lombok, NTB, to Jakarta. This was conveyed by KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo. ‘In the series of events of the sting operation, the team detained a total of 19 people, seven of whom will be brought to the KPK’s Merah Putih Building tonight for further examination. Among those detained is the West Lombok Regent,’ Budi explained at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in Jakarta. Budi explained that West Lombok Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini is suspected of involvement in alleged corruption in building or infrastructure projects within the West Lombok Regency. The anti-corruption agency is conducting intensive investigations to uncover illegal fund flows in the tender or implementation processes of these projects. The KPK has detailed the flow of corruption funds involving West Lombok Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini, amounting to IDR 12.4 billion, originating from procurement projects and bribes involving the company PT Meconel.
