Profile of KontraS Activist Andrie Yunus, Attacked with Caustic Liquid, Vocal Critic of Military Law Amendment
Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), was attacked by an unidentified assailant who doused him with caustic liquid.
According to Dimas Bagus Arya, coordinator of KontraS’s working board, the attack caused severe injuries across Yunus’s entire body, particularly affecting both hands, face, chest, and eye area.
In his role at KontraS, Yunus has been active in advocating human rights issues, security sector reform, and providing support to victims of state violence.
Before joining KontraS in 2022, Yunus worked at the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute from 2019 to 2022 as an advocate focused on public law advocacy. During his time there, he was involved in various case management related to civil liberties and protection of community rights.
Yunus is an alumnus of Indonesia Jentera Law School and a Jentera Scholar. He graduated in 2020 with a thesis examining the role of paralegals in achieving equality before the law.
He has been involved in advocacy and public campaigns regarding security sector reform issues, including criticism of proposed revisions to the Military Law, which he regarded as potentially expanding military authority into the civilian sphere.
In 2025, Yunus came under public scrutiny after attending, alongside several civil society activists, a closed-door meeting discussing the Military Law revision held at a hotel in Jakarta. The action was conducted as a protest against legislative processes considered lacking in transparency.
Additionally, he served as a witness during the formal constitutionality hearing of the Military Law at the Constitutional Court, providing testimony from a civil society perspective.
