Profile of Daryono, the Resigned BMKG Earthquake Director
Daryono, Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), has announced his resignation from the position. He has also decided to take early retirement from the institution. “Through this message, I wish to convey that I have submitted my resignation as Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, while also applying for early retirement from BMKG,” Daryono said in a statement on Friday, February 13, 2026. Through his social media account on X, @dar_gempa2sg, Daryono explained that his resignation was health-related. “Seeking health and happiness,” Daryono wrote in response to a netizen’s question. Despite his early retirement, he said his commitment to public education in the fields of seismology and disaster preparedness would not cease. He noted a sense of scientific, educational, and moral responsibility in a disaster-prone country like Indonesia. As such, he remains open to serving as an expert source on earthquakes and tsunamis.
According to the Meteorology and Geophysics Alumni Association (Ikamega) website, Daryono earned a three-year diploma (D-III) from the Academy of Meteorology and Geophysics in Jakarta. After completing his diploma, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in the Meteorology and Geophysics program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Indonesia, graduating in 2000. Daryono continued his education at the master’s level, studying dryland management at Udayana University in Bali, completing his degree in 2002. He then earned a doctorate in Geographic Sciences from Gadjah Mada University in 2006.
Born in Semarang on February 21, 1971, he began his career as a technical staff member at BMKG Region III Denpasar. Daryono was also active as a geophysics researcher at the institution. Throughout his career, he held various strategic positions. He served as Head of the Academic Administration and Cadet Affairs Subdivision at the College of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics. He also served as Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Division at BMKG, as well as Head of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Early Warning Division. His final position at BMKG was Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis.
Daryono is also a prolific author of scientific articles. The scientist has written more than 81 internationally standardized scientific publications and 17 national scientific publications. He is also active on social media, presenting technical disaster-related data in language easily understood by the general public. Daryono has represented Indonesia on the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Meteorology and Geophysics. He is also active as part of the seismology working group at the National Earthquake Study Center and serves as a member of the Expert Council at the Indonesian Geophysicists Association.
