Profile of Anwar Usman, Constitutional Court Justice Retiring After 15 Years of Service
Anwar Usman officially retired as a Constitutional Court (MK) justice on 6 April 2026. On Monday (6 April 2026), Anwar Usman completed 15 years of service at the institution known as the “guardian of the constitution.” In his final hearing on Monday (16 March 2026), Anwar Usman conveyed his apologies for his tenure as an MK justice. “For that reason, from the depths of my heart, I extend my apologies,” stated Anwar Usman on Monday. Anwar Usman is a man born in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on 31 December 1956. According to the official MK website, Anwar Usman spent his childhood in his hometown of Bima. For six years, from 1969 to 1975, he pursued education at the State Islamic Religious Teachers’ School (PGAN) in that city. He then continued his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Islam Jakarta (UNJ), graduating in 1984. Anwar Usman earned his master’s degree from the Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Hukum (STIH) IBLAM Jakarta in 2001. Anwar Usman’s legal career began in 1984, when he obtained his Bachelor of Law degree. In that year, Anwar tried his luck by taking the candidate judge test. He passed the selection and was appointed as a candidate judge at the Bogor District Court in 1985. Anwar Usman’s legal career continued to rise until he moved to the Supreme Court (MA). Throughout his time at the MA, Anwar held several positions, such as Assistant to the Chief Justice (1997-2003) and Head of the Personnel Bureau of the MA (2003-2006). He also served as Head of the Research and Development Agency, Education and Training, Law and Judiciary (Litbang Diklat Kumdil) of the MA from 2006 to 2011.
