Indonesia’s 6th Vice President, retired General Try Sutrisno, passed away at RSPAD Gatot Subroto hospital in Central Jakarta this morning at 06.58 Western Indonesia Time. Try Sutrisno began his career in the Army.

Try Sutrisno served as Indonesia’s 6th Vice President from 1993 to 1998, accompanying President Soeharto during his tenure. He was born in Surabaya in 1935 and passed away at the age of 90.

Try was one of the few Vice Presidents to come from a military background. He graduated from the Army Engineering Academy in 1959. After graduation, he was first assigned to Kodam IV/Sriwijaya as Commander of the Engineer Battalion. During his military career, Try served as Chief of the Army General Staff from 1986 to 1988 and as Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia from 1988 to 1993.

In 1961, Try married Tuti Sutiawati and was blessed with seven children, consisting of four sons and three daughters.

In 1993, Try Sutrisno was selected as Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia through the General Session of the MPR (People’s Consultative Assembly) for the 1992–1997 term, serving alongside President Soeharto. His term as Vice President ended in 1998, when he was succeeded by BJ Habibie at the 1998 General Session of the MPR.
