Productivity Soars, AI Digital Talent Becomes Key to Indonesia's Competitiveness
The ability of Indonesia’s digital talent to utilise artificial intelligence (AI) continues to show significant development. No longer just technology users, more young Indonesians are now able to design and build AI-based solutions to address various real challenges in society, industry, and the government sector.
This trend signals an important shift in the national digital ecosystem. AI, previously seen as a future technology, has become a skill needed today. With increasingly broad access to learning and support from various stakeholders, Indonesia’s digital talent is beginning to transform into innovators capable of generating social and economic impact through technology.
This progress was visible at the AI Impact Challenge Innovation Showcase held in Jakarta. The event served as a platform for digital talent to exhibit various AI-based innovations developed after participating in the Microsoft Elevate Training Center (METC) programme. A total of 363 teams participated in the competition, which was designed to test participants’ ability to implement AI skills in real projects. Participants were challenged to deliver relevant solutions to various problems in the public and industrial sectors.
The competition consisted of two main categories: a Datathon focusing on data analysis and the use of AI to produce data-based recommendations, and a Hackathon challenging participants to build innovative digital solutions to answer real-world problems.
The Microsoft Elevate Training Center is part of Microsoft’s global Elevate initiative aimed at accelerating the development of AI skills and digital competencies. By 2026, this programme will provide learning access to more than 42,000 Indonesian digital talents in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and cloud technology based on Microsoft Azure. In addition to self-paced learning through the Dicoding platform, participants also have the opportunity to attend online and offline training guided by industry practitioners. This approach is designed so that participants not only understand concepts and theories but are also able to apply AI technology to produce solutions with real impact.
Director General of Digital Ecosystem at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, conveyed the government’s support for such programmes as part of efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s sovereignty in the AI field. “The Ministry of Komdigi appreciates and supports the AI Impact Challenge collaboration programme from the Microsoft Elevate Training Centre. The ministry’s support is proof of our commitment to strengthening the nation’s sovereignty in AI. This aspect of AI Sovereignty is very important so that Indonesia can advance in technology and solve real problems in society with its own strength,” he stated on Friday (19/6/2026).
In agreement, Special Staff to the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs for Youth and Startups, Alfreno Kautsar Ramadhan, stressed the importance of presenting various real use cases from society to trigger the birth of relevant and applicable AI-based innovations.
Meanwhile, Government Affairs Director of Microsoft Indonesia, Widya Listyowulan, assessed that digital human resource development is an important aspect in encouraging responsible and broadly impactful AI utilisation. “The AI Impact Challenge is more than just a technology competition. It is a form of strategic digital HR development because it is oriented towards solving the problems we face every day. The resulting innovations have the potential to provide real benefits to society,” she said.
CEO of Dicoding Indonesia, Narenda Wicaksono, revealed that based on the Indonesia Developer Outlook 2026, 67.3% of Indonesian digital talent use AI daily in their activities. In fact, 93.6% of them admitted to experiencing significant productivity increases thanks to the use of this technology. According to Narenda, this data shows that AI is no longer just a technology trend, but a mandatory skill in the current digital era. Therefore, it is important for Indonesian digital talent not only to be AI users but also to be able to create solutions that provide real impact for society.
He added that the collaboration between Microsoft and Dicoding since 2025 has opened access to technology learning for more than 80,000 Indonesian digital talents. This effort is part of a strategy to strengthen the nation’s competitiveness amidst a digital transformation increasingly influenced by AI developments. “Through the AI Impact Challenge Innovation Showcase, collaboration between the government, industry, and the technology community is expected to continue strengthening the national AI ecosystem. The presence of digital talents capable of turning knowledge into real solutions is important capital for Indonesia to compete and innovate in the era of the AI-based digital economy,” concluded Narenda.
