Probolinggo, East Java (ANTARA) — Officers from the Probolinggo Resort Police are continuing their pursuit of the perpetrators behind the theft of seven suitcases belonging to foreign tourists from Thailand during their visit to the Mount Bromo tourist area in East Java.

“We are currently still examining CCTV recordings, other pieces of evidence, and taking statements from several witnesses,” said Probolinggo Police Chief Senior Commissioner M. Wahyudin Latif when contacted for confirmation on Friday.

The police are working intensively to identify the perpetrators who stole the Thai tourists’ suitcases, which contained electronic items such as cameras and iPhones, cash, and important documents including passports.

“We have formed a special team to expedite the resolution of this case, as the incident could damage the security image of Mount Bromo, which has until now been safe and conducive for visitors,” he said.

Based on initial review of CCTV footage from around the location, the Criminal Investigation Unit of Probolinggo Police has conducted an investigation and taken statements from a number of residents near the crime scene at the Mount Bromo tourist area.

“The Criminal Investigation Unit has currently examined witnesses who were in the vicinity of the crime scene in order to uncover the incident thoroughly and conclusively,” he said.

Probolinggo Police are committed to resolving the case professionally and providing a sense of security to all tourists visiting Mount Bromo, both international and domestic.

The seven suitcases belonging to the Thai tourists, containing valuable items, went missing during their holiday in the Mount Bromo area, Sukapura sub-district, Probolinggo regency, on Sunday (15 February). The theft occurred while the tourist group’s vehicle was parked at the Sukapura Sub-district Pavilion.

All the tourists’ suitcases had originally been stored inside the parked vehicle. The driver and the tourist group then briefly stepped out, and the vehicle carrying the luggage was locked. When the group returned to the vehicle, the contents were in disarray and seven suitcases containing valuable items were missing.

Total losses suffered by the Thai tourist group are estimated at approximately Rp108 million, and the case has been reported to Probolinggo Police.
