Pro and Anti-MBG Protesters Hold Separate Rallies at Jakarta's Patung Kuda
Two groups of protesters held separate demonstrations near the Patung Kuda monument on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan in Central Jakarta on Thursday (18/6/2026), voicing opposing views on the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme. The rally on the side of the road leading to Tugu Tani was occupied by a group calling themselves the Indonesian Children’s Nutrition Fighters, who demanded the programme be continued. Dressed entirely in white and carrying banners and posters, the group expressed full support for President Prabowo Subianto’s initiative. ‘We are here to fully support President Prabowo Subianto’s noble vision of providing nutritious food to Indonesian children,’ said coordinator Fahri at the scene. Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the road leading towards the Patung Kuda monument, members of the HMI (Islamic Students’ Association) Greater Jakarta branch held a separate protest. This group called for a total evaluation of the MBG programme, alongside other demands including lowering staple food prices and the immediate ratification of the Asset Forfeiture Bill. Both groups remained focused on their respective orators and no friction occurred between the two rallies. Police officers were present to secure the area and redirect traffic away from the demonstration site.
