Private car inspections

From Bisnis Indonesia

As a Jakarta citizen and taxpayer since 1973, I object to the
plan of the land transport director general at the ministry of
transportation, to issue a government regulation on compulsory
inspections of private motor vehicles, for the following reasons:
* In general, most private cars are properly maintained and
roadworthy, particularly because they have to be used because the
appallingly poor public transportation facilities in this city.
* Such a regulation will just be a waste of time and taxpayer
money, while creating an opportunity for more corruption
involving personnel from all the government agencies involved in
its implementation.
* Pollution and gas emission tests in major cities have proven
that only a small number of public transportation vehicles are
roadworthy.
* The control and improvement of public transportation should be
prioritized, including the obligation of drivers to use seat
belts, obey the speed limit and be more disciplined about other
rules of the road.
