Primary School Students Visit Beach to Learn Hands-on Waste Management
Community empowerment in tourist areas involves not only economic activities but also environmental management involving residents and the younger generation. This approach is being implemented through support for MSME actors at Legian Beach and waste management education for primary school students.
This series of activities was held during MMSGI Connect 2026 in Bali, involving MMS Group Indonesia (MMSGI), the Life After Mine Foundation (LINE), and MMS Land through Pullman Bali Legian Beach. The programme includes providing facilities for MSMEs, beach clean-up actions, and education on waste sorting and management.
In the Legian Beach area, 20 parasols and nine sorted waste bins were handed over to MSMEs through PUBDA Legian. These facilities are expected to support the activities of business owners operating in the beach area while enhancing visitor comfort.
Regarding the environmental aspect, the ‘Bigger Dream 2026’ programme involved 150 students and 25 teachers from SD Negeri 1 Legian, 30 MMSGI employees, and the Malu Dong Bali community. The series of activities began with a beach clean-up action at Legian Beach on Sunday (27/9).
The students then participated in waste management education using the “See, Pick, Sort, Dispose” method. They were taught to recognise different types of waste, sort them by category, and understand how to reuse materials that still hold value.
To support the implementation of these habits at school, SD Negeri 1 Legian received waste management facilities including sorted bins, a bottle press, tumblers, and cleaning equipment. The Malu Dong Bali community also received eco-vests and waste drop boxes to support waste collection activities in the Legian Beach area.
MMSGI CEO Sendy Greti stated that community empowerment must be translated into activities that provide direct benefits while involving various parties.
“For us, connection becomes more meaningful when it can be translated into empowerment. Through support for MSMEs, education for children, and collaboration with schools and communities, we want to bring benefits that can continue to grow for both the community and the environment,” Sendy said in a press release on Tuesday (29/9/2026).
The Head of SD Negeri 1 Legian, Noor Octa Fiyanti, noted that the activity provided students with direct experience in understanding waste management and environmental preservation.
“By learning to manage waste circularly today, these children are protecting their own future,” she said.
The series of activities brings together local economic empowerment with environmental education and action in the tourist area. The involvement of schools, communities, MSMEs, and corporations demonstrates that environmental management can be carried out alongside the strengthening of local community activities.
