Prices of medium- and premium-grade rice rise in Sukabumi City
Rice prices in Sukabumi City, West Java, rose on Thursday, 5 March. The price rise is likely linked to reduced supply, possibly triggered by weather conditions. Prices rose across all rice varieties, both medium and premium. Data from the Sukabumi City Department of Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Industry and Trade (Diskumindag) show Ciherang Cianjur I rising to Rp15,200 per kg from Rp14,800; Ciherang Cianjur II up from Rp14,000 to Rp14,800; Ciherang Sukabumi up from Rp14,800 to Rp15,200 per kg. A similar pattern was seen for premium rice, class I rising from Rp14,400 to Rp15,200 per kg and premium class II up from Rp14,000 to Rp14,800 per kg. Medium rice also increased from Rp13,100 to Rp14,400 per kg, and local medium — the lowest — from Rp12,400 to Rp13,500 per kg. Head of Diskumindag Kota Sukabumi, Een Rukmini, said the price rise was probably due to reduced supply, suspecting weather conditions that could cause crop failures at the farm level. ‘Our monitoring at Pasar Pelita and Pasar Tipar Gede shows that the price rises concern rice,’ he said, accompanied by Head of Domestic Trade Section, M Rifki, on Thursday (5/3). He noted that prices had been relatively stable previously, but extreme weather recently could lead to crop failures affecting production. ‘The possibility is a weather factor,’ he added. Beyond rice, other staple foods also rose, including red chilli peppers. They are now Rp100,000 per kg, up from around Rp80,000 per kg. ‘The rise in red chillies is quite significant. This is likely due to supply being constrained or stable, but demand rising,’ he concluded. Meanwhile, other staples remained relatively stable: beef around Rp140,000 per kg, broiler chicken Rp40,000 per kg, and eggs around Rp31,000 per kg. (H-2) Entering the second week of Ramadan 1447 H, prices of eggs, chillies, and onions in Sukabumi began to fall. Check the latest price lists and staple stock.
