Prices of electronic goods rose by 5% over two months

JAKARTA (JP): Electronic goods traders at Glodok and Senen market said on Wednesday that during the last two months the price of electronic goods increased by an average of 5 percent.

One of the main causes of the increase was the weakening of the rupiah against the dollar.

Avin, an attendant of Inti Jaya store at Glodok Harco shopping complex in West Jakarta, pointed out that two months ago the store sold a JVC 21-inch TV set at Rp 1.95 million but now it had risen to Rp 2.1 million.

The price of a Sony 21-inch TV set for example had also climbed from Rp 2.55 million to Rp 2.65 million.

Similarly, Atiow who runs Cahaya store said prices of electronic goods at his store had risen since February.

For example the price of a JVC VCD player increased from Rp 500,000 to Rp 525,000.

Riandi who runs Reliance Computer store said prices of computer sets had increased by up to 15 percent.

"I now sell assembled computer sets at Rp 3.6 million. Before the dollar strengthened in February, I sold them at a price of Rp 3 million," he said.

He added that the built up computers were more expensive. "An Acer 6378 used to be sold at US$999, but now it has become $1025 while the price of an HP printer has also risen from Rp 850,000 to Rp 950,000," he said.

But on electronics trade at the market Arianto said that his store had not raised prices, the main reason being that he still has a lot of old stock. (01)
