Prices of chilli and onions at Tangsel market expected to continue rising until Eid al-Adha
TANGERANG SELATAN, KOMPAS.com — The rise in food commodity prices is predicted to continue to experience increases until Eid al-Adha 2026, particularly for chili and onions. This is especially evident among traditional market traders in Tangsel, who have started to feel price rises at the start of the week. ‘If for Lebaran it’s still going up. When will it fall? Probably after the Hajj holiday is over, that’s when it might drop again. If it’s like this, it’s not possible to say prices will drop,’ said Mimin (43), a trader at Pasar Ciputat, when contacted by Kompas.com at the location on Friday (22/5/2026). He noted that the price of red curled chili on Thursday (21/5/2026) was Rp 50,000 per kilogram. However, when he sold today, the price rose to Rp 60,000 per kg. ‘Only today. Yesterday it wasn’t rising much. Yesterday Rp 50,000 per kg, now Rp 60,000 per kg. The increase happened very quickly,’ he explained. Meanwhile, another trader at Pasar Ciputat, Asep (25), said that the commodities currently experiencing the biggest rise are chili and red onions. According to him, the price of red rawit chili rose from Rp 75,000 to Rp 90,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, peeled onions, which previously sold for around Rp 45,000 to Rp 50,000 per kg, now reach Rp 75,000 per kg. He predicted that the prices would continue to rise until Eid al-Adha. However, Asep hopes that prices will fall after the holiday has ended. ‘Prices will drop, perhaps. Hopefully yes,’ he said. As a result of the price increases, Asep said he has started to reduce stock to avoid losses.
