Prevent Land Disputes by Ensuring Sturdy Land Boundary Markers

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Maintaining land boundaries is an important step to protect ownership rights while preventing potential conflicts between neighbours. The public, particularly those returning to their hometowns to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, are urged to ensure their land boundaries are clearly visible and firmly installed to avoid legal or social issues in the future. Shamy Ardian stated that safeguarding land boundaries is necessary to prevent conflicts with neighbours, protect ownership rights, facilitate sales and inheritance, and avoid legal problems. Shamy Ardian added that determining the location and boundaries of land is an essential requirement in the land parcel measurement process for registration purposes. This is regulated in Government Regulation No. 24 of 1997 on Land Registration, which states that to obtain physical data for land registration, the land parcel to be mapped must be measured after its location and boundaries have been determined and boundary markers have been installed at each corner of the land parcel. “Do not neglect maintaining land boundaries because it will lead to land disputes that result in lengthy legal processes, even financial losses. And the most undesirable outcome is the deterioration of social relations with neighbours,” explained Shamy Ardian. Therefore, Shamy Ardian urged the public to start ensuring their land boundaries through several simple steps, one of which is installing permanent boundary stakes. In this process, it is necessary to involve adjacent landowners during the measurement. The next most important step is to immediately process land certificates as valid proof of ownership if the currently occupied land is not yet certified. The existence of a land certificate is very important because it contains official information regarding the location, area, and boundaries of the land parcel recognised by the state. “It is hoped that the public will begin checking their land boundaries to protect assets and avoid problems in the future,” he concluded.
