Press Council: Three Tech Giants Control 80 Percent of Indonesia's Digital Advertising
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Press Council has revealed that three technology companies — Google, Meta, and TikTok — control 80 percent of Indonesia’s digital advertising market, valued at Rp71 trillion.
Dahlan Dahi, Chair of the Press Council’s Digital and Sustainability Commission, stated that the remaining 20 percent of advertising value is contested by more than 50 press companies.
“So, the ecosystem now shows an unfair imbalance. Three groups dominate advertising, while media groups are increasingly marginalised and will continue to be pushed aside,” Dahlan said during an online press conference in Jakarta on Monday.
He therefore sees a need for action, especially with the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) that uses journalistic work as a source for algorithms to distribute information and news without any compensation.
Dahlan did not deny that digital disruption is gradually hitting press companies and journalists, manifesting in forms such as layoffs and various types of disinformation.
In response to these conditions, the Press Council has undertaken several strategic initiatives, including discussing press issues through the 2026 National Mass Media Convention. On that occasion, Dahlan said the council discussed the fate of journalists, press companies, and their funding.
“Another strategic initiative is to position journalistic work as work that must have economic rights,” he said.
He explained that under the old regulations, journalistic work could be quoted, disseminated, and manifested simply by citing the source. However, amid digital disruption, the Ministry of Law has taken the initiative to revise the Copyright Law and include journalistic work as a product that holds economic rights.
“We hope that the revision of the Copyright Law will receive support from all parties,” Dahlan concluded.
