Press Council: Media Maintains Information Quality in the Era of Information Disruption

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Press Council Chairman Komaruddin Hidayat emphasised that the press holds an irreplaceable role as the guardian of information quality in the era of digital information disruption.

“The press’s role will not be displaced. Throughout time, it is needed because it guards the goal, maintaining the quality of information,” said Komaruddin during the World Press Freedom Day 2026 commemoration in Jakarta on Sunday.

He likened information disruption from new media to rafting on a river with waves and rocks blocking the way.

In Komaruddin’s view, information disruption must become a challenge and driver for media practitioners to consistently maintain the quality of information delivered to the public.

Furthermore, he said that in the current digital era, everyone can communicate and access information easily and without limits. Komaruddin assessed that at such a moment, the press’s role becomes crucial in ensuring the public receives quality information.

“Let us regulate, let us educate so that freedom is maintained, but also continues to protect the public’s freedom to obtain quality information,” he stated.

“For me, press freedom is a human right. The issue now, in the midst of an information era that is so disrupted, the press needs to shape itself to become more professional,” said Benny at the Press Council Building, Jakarta, on Sunday.

He said that mainstream media still has a competitive advantage because it is better known to the public and can reflect society’s conditions.

“Mainstream media, online media, or new media have in common the effort to enlighten the nation’s life,” he stated.

Benny emphasised that ANTARA has an important role in presenting information that helps society make the right decisions, both for themselves and their communities.
