Presidential Staff Office Appreciates Prison Programme Providing Skills for Inmates

Jakarta - Chief of Presidential Staff, General (Ret.) Dudung Abdurachman, has expressed appreciation for the rehabilitation programmes conducted in correctional facilities and hopes they can be utilised by inmates to gain skills for life after completing their sentences. According to a statement from the Presidential Staff Office received in Jakarta on Tuesday, Chief of Presidential Staff Dudung, together with Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto, visited the Tangerang Class I Correctional Facility today to observe first-hand the various rehabilitation programmes being run for inmates. “Firstly, I see that the cleanliness, order, and discipline are very good. Then, what is particularly outstanding is that the inmates can produce saleable products from coal waste raw materials. The results are very profitable and will serve as provisions for them after they are released later,” said Dudung. During the visit, he directly observed various rehabilitation programmes for inmates, ranging from environmental cleanliness and order to skills training that produces economically valuable products. “All citizens have the right to do good, all citizens also have the right to improve themselves. This means that through this rehabilitation, they will continue to develop,” he said. He also appreciated the various rehabilitation programmes continuously developed by the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections. “The inmates here do not feel lonely, bored, or weary, thanks to these extraordinary activities, so they truly feel nurtured, not alienated,” said Dudung. The visit was part of the Presidential Staff Office’s duties in monitoring the implementation of the government’s strategic policies across various sectors. Through field visits, he said they can ensure priority programmes are running effectively, including efforts to strengthen the correctional system, which is oriented not only towards law enforcement but also towards rehabilitation, empowerment, and social reintegration of inmates as part of Indonesia’s human resource development.
