Presidential spokesperson needed

The need for a presidential spokesman is quite urgent. This issue has become a concern not only of the legislature, but also of various circles in society.

The proposal is based on a number of reasons. First, Cabinet ministers tend to differ with each other in their statements. Consequently, this may harm the image of Megawati's administration.

The current ministers' backgrounds are diverse compared to the more or less similar political background of Cabinet members under the New Order.

Second, the problems we face are serious and complex. The public therefore needs accurate and reliable information. This information is also important to provide direction in seeking solutions for all national issues.

It is extremely important that the information should be conveyed clearly and accurately. But daily affairs in society are developing at such a great speed that information should also be communicated promptly to avoid public confusion.

Third, some Cabinet members have limited communication skills.

Thus with an appointed spokesperson, selected information will hopefully reach the public in an appropriate and correct manner, without imposing an extra burden on the Cabinet and its top leader.
