Presidential cattle aid for 'meugang' tradition reaches Langkahan flood refugees
North Aceh, Aceh — Cattle donated by President Prabowo Subianto for the meugang tradition to welcome the holy month of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah have reached refugees in Krueng Lingka village, Langkahan district, North Aceh regency, Aceh.
The area is one of the locations affected by the flash floods at the end of November 2025.
"As members of the Acehnese community affected by the floods, who are still enduring this great disaster, we are deeply grateful to the President," said Krueng Lingka village head Efendi Noerdin when met at the Langkahan temporary housing project site in North Aceh on Tuesday.
As an area 100 per cent affected by the flash floods, Efendi described the presidential cattle donation as a breath of fresh air for carrying out the meugang tradition.
According to the official Aceh government website, the meugang or makmeugang tradition involves cooking meat to be enjoyed together with family, relatives, and orphans.
The meugang tradition is observed by communities throughout Aceh to welcome important Islamic occasions, namely before Ramadan, before Eid al-Fitr, and before Eid al-Adha.
"Meugang is obligatory in our customs. With our area currently destroyed — houses, buildings, public facilities, including the market — naturally this commodity [beef] is difficult for ordinary people to obtain," he said.
Therefore, he continued, with the president's assistance, the community can enjoy beef and hold the meugang tradition as usual.
Efendi said residents of Krueng Lingka village received two head of cattle with an estimated gross weight of 700 kilogrammes. The net weight of pure meat, he estimated, would be approximately 240 kilogrammes.
"We will first estimate the amount of meat and bones, then distribute it equally per household," Efendi said.
Krueng Lingka village comprises 312 households or approximately 1,117 residents. Currently, there are two evacuation points in Krueng Lingka village, with 44 households still displaced.
Previously, the Aceh government stated that President Prabowo Subianto had transferred funds for the purchase of cattle for the meugang tradition ahead of Ramadan for disaster-affected communities in Aceh, valued at more than Rp72.7 billion.
The assistance was channelled through a fund transfer mechanism from the President via the Presidential Secretariat, directly to 19 regency and city governments on Tuesday (10 February), totalling Rp72,750,000,000.
