Presidential candidate is sick
EAST TIMOR: Presidential candidate Fransisco Xavier do Amaral was
in the hospital on Monday after collapsing with pneumonia over
the weekend, a medical official said.
Amaral, 67, was taken to East Timor's National Hospital on
Saturday after appearing in a televised debate with the only
other candidate in the race, former independence leader Alexandre
"Xanana" Gusmao.
Doctors said Amaral would remain hospitalized for at least a
week. He was diagnosed with pneumonia, hypertension and a swollen
heart.
East Timor is scheduled to become the world's newest nation on
May 20. --AP
