President Donald Trump is under renewed scrutiny after his annual financial disclosure revealed a significant increase in his personal wealth while in office. As many Americans continue to struggle with the high cost of living, Trump has profited enormously from cryptocurrency ventures, royalties, and real estate, reigniting debate over potential conflicts of interest ahead of the midterm elections.

“We all benefit. I benefit because I have a lot of money and a lot of cash,” Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One on Wednesday. He also asserted that his assets are managed by investment funds and that he is not involved in day-to-day business operations.

According to the documents, Trump earned more than US$526 million from the sale of crypto tokens linked to World Liberty Financial LLC, a company partly managed by his sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. Additionally, a licensing agreement for his meme coin generated approximately US$635 million. Beyond digital assets, Trump continues to receive income from Trump-branded businesses, including royalties from Bibles, perfumes, watches, and shoes, demonstrating that his business empire remains profitable even as he occupies the White House.

The situation has drawn sharp criticism from ethics watchdogs. Danielle Caputo, a senior ethics advisor at the Campaign Legal Center, questioned whether the administration’s increasingly crypto-friendly policies serve the public interest or the president’s personal finances. “It becomes impossible to know whether the president is making crypto regulations for the American people or for his own businesses,” she stated.

The Trump administration has denied any conflict of interest, insisting that all policies prioritise national interests. However, observers argue that public perception remains a serious issue, particularly as the government has relaxed several oversight measures on the crypto industry, which is now one of Trump’s largest sources of wealth.

Further controversy stems from the acceptance of a Boeing 747 valued at US$400 million as a gift from Qatar. Trump described the jet as a contribution from the Qatari government to the United States, and Doha confirmed the transaction was part of intergovernmental cooperation. Nonetheless, critics suggest the move could create the impression that US foreign policy might be influenced by foreign interests.

The Democratic Party is already leveraging the issue as political ammunition ahead of the midterm elections. Congressman Jason Crow of Colorado accused Trump of earning over US$1 billion from crypto businesses during his term and labelled the jet gift from Qatar as a symbol of political corruption, although no evidence of legal wrongdoing has been presented. The wealth controversy emerges as a majority of Americans continue to complain about high prices for essential goods, with recent polls indicating weakening public trust in Trump’s economic policies.
