President to Grant Amnesty on 17 August, Recipients Must Join Reserve Component

Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto has stated that President Prabowo Subianto is preparing to grant amnesty to prisoners on 17 August this year. Before being released, recipients will be required to undergo the reserve component (Komcad) programme. “Hopefully there will be a second amnesty from the President. The information is that on 17 August there will be a grant of amnesty to prisoners,” Agus said during the national kick-off for tuberculosis screening at the Class IIA Ngaseman Prison in Nusakambangan, Cilacap, Central Java, on Monday (29/6). Agus urged prisoners to participate properly in the prison’s development and guidance programmes so they have the opportunity to receive amnesty from the President. According to Agus, the amnesty is one of the government’s concrete efforts to address overcrowding in a number of prisons and detention centres across Indonesia. He said the amnesty is planned to target prisoners under the age of 35. Recipients will not be released immediately but will instead join the reserve component programme to build discipline after serving their sentences. In 2025, President Prabowo Subianto granted amnesty to 1,178 convicts. Amnesty is a presidential prerogative under Article 14 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, granted with consideration from the House of Representatives. Agus also highlighted the issue of overcapacity and overcrowding in prisons and detention centres, which affects the health conditions of inmates, including the risk of tuberculosis transmission. The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections is cooperating with the Ministry of Health to conduct national tuberculosis screening in 532 prisons and detention centres across Indonesia, targeting 272,573 inmates.
