President to Grant Amnesty on 17 August, Recipients Must Join Reserve Component
The Minister of Immigration and Correctional Services, Agus Andrianto, stated that President Prabowo Subianto is preparing to grant amnesty to prison inmates on 17 August this year. Before being released, recipients of the amnesty must undergo the National Reserve Component (Komcad) programme.
“Hopefully, there will be a second amnesty from the President. The information is that on 17 August, there will be the granting of amnesty to prison inmates,” said Agus during the national kick-off for tuberculosis (TB) screening at the Class IIA Ngasemban Prison, Nusakambangan, Cilacap, Central Java, on Monday (29/6).
Agus urged inmates to participate properly in the rehabilitation and guidance programmes within the prisons to increase their chances of receiving presidential amnesty.
“I convey this appeal to those currently undergoing sentencing: follow the rehabilitation and guidance processes well. Hopefully, based on the officers’ assessments, you will have the opportunity to receive amnesty from the President,” he said.
According to Agus, the granting of amnesty is one of the government’s concrete efforts to address overcrowding in numerous prisons and detention centres across Indonesia.
He noted that the amnesty is planned to target inmates under the age of 35. Recipients will not be released immediately but will instead participate in the National Reserve Component (Komcad) programme to build discipline following their period of imprisonment.
“As I mentioned, hopefully, the President will grant amnesty to prison inmates under the age of 35 this August. However, they will not be released directly, but will join the Komcad so that they can become disciplined,” said Agus.
In 2025, President Prabowo Subianto granted amnesty to 1,178 convicts. Amnesty is a prerogative right of the President under Article 14 of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, subject to the consideration of the House of Representatives (DPR).
Agus also touched upon the issues of overcrowding and inmate density in prisons and detention centres, which impact the health conditions of inmates, including the risk of tuberculosis (TB) transmission.
The Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is conducting national TB screening across 532 prisons and detention centres throughout Indonesia, targeting 272,573 inmates.
