President targets completion of school revitalisation by 2029

President Prabowo Subianto has targeted the completion of the revitalisation programme for all educational units in need of repair by 2029. “This year we have repaired more than 71,744 schools, last year it was 17,000. Next year our target is 100,000, in 2028, 100,000 schools, and by 2029, all schools in Indonesia—primary, junior secondary, senior secondary, vocational, including Islamic boarding schools—must have their renovations completed,” he stated during the State Address at the 2026 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly and the Joint Session of the Regional Representative Council and the House of Representatives at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday. Prabowo added that the completion of the school revitalisation programme also encompasses disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions, such as Miangas Island in the Talaud Regency, North Sulawesi Province. To address this situation, the President stressed that the revitalisation programme for all educational units must continue to be accelerated in 2027 and 2028. He set a high target so that the programme can be completed by 2029 at the latest. “This is the largest school renovation programme in our history. We must dare to set high targets,” the President added. By 2029, Prabowo wants there to be no more reports or stories about damaged classrooms or collapsed schools. “All schools must be in good, safe, clean, and fit-for-learning condition. All schools must have proper toilets,” Prabowo stated. On a separate occasion, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, said his ministry had already requested a budget allocation from the Ministry of Finance to support the President’s target. “We are still requesting the budget from the Ministry of Finance so that there will be an increase in 2027,” Mu’ti said following the Government’s Introductory Statement on the Draft Law on the 2027 State Budget and its Financial Note by President Prabowo Subianto at the Jakarta Parliamentary Complex. The educational units that will receive the revitalisation programme cover the entirety of Indonesia. “However, for 2025 and 2026, what has been agreed with the President, God willing, can be completed, so that in 2027, we will strive to budget for 100,000 educational units, hopefully. But this is still being proposed again to the Minister of Finance,” said Mu’ti.
