President targets completion of 100 GW solar power plant construction within three years
President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for Indonesia to build solar power plants (PLTS) with a total capacity of 100 gigawatts (GW) within three years to ensure the country’s energy independence.
“We will build 100 gigawatts and we are not playing around. Our target is 100 gigawatts in three years,” said President Prabowo at the inauguration of the 100 GWp solar power plant at the Java–Bali Sea Crossing Operation Monument in Jembrana Regency, Bali, on Tuesday.
He highlighted that Indonesia’s current power generation capacity, including coal, oil, gas and geothermal, stands at 88 gigawatts. The new development is expected to secure the nation’s energy self-sufficiency and resilience.
Beyond energy independence, the construction of the power plants is also expected to reduce state expenditure. The development of 100 gigawatt peak (GWp) of solar power could support electricity cost efficiency of up to Rp73.9 trillion.
Regarding the plan, he then asked about the commitment of Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board as well as CEO of Danantara Rosan Roeslani, President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo and President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) Simon Aloysius Mantiri.
All the ministers, the CEO of Danantara, and the directors of PLN and Pertamina subsequently expressed their readiness to support the achievement of the development target.
“We will prove it again. In three years we will gather again. We now always speak with evidence,” said the Head of State.
He said that with the construction of 100 gigawatts of solar power, combined with geothermal potential and newly discovered oil fields, Indonesia should no longer need to import oil to meet its energy needs.
The move was taken considering that Indonesia has solar energy potential of around 3,294 GWp, while installed capacity as of April 2026 had only reached around 1.5 GWp.
The programme will be built in stages: phase I of 17 GWp, phase II of 18 GWp, and phase III of 30 GWp. The government is targeting all construction to be completed by 2029.
“We must no longer import even one barrel of oil. We must no longer import. God willing, in the shortest possible time, we must no longer import even one cylinder of LPG,” concluded Prabowo Subianto.
