President Prabowo's Giant Sacrificial Cattle: From 'Gemoy' to 'Sambo'
Eid al-Adha 2026 celebrations were enlivened by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s donated sacrificial cattle across various regions. Several of these cattle drew public attention for their large size and memorable names, including “Gemoy” and “Sambo”. President Prabowo distributed 1,098 sacrificial cattle to different parts of Indonesia, with these allocated to local governments, mosques, Islamic boarding schools, and social and religious organisations. Two cattle were placed side by side under a red-and-white tent, tied to a steel frame, with crowds gathering to view and photograph the giant cattle. Prabowo’s cow had a distinctive white head, while Gibran’s cow wore a bell necklace. Murasin Kilung, chairman of Masjid Jami Al-Ichrom’s Mosque Management Board, expressed gratitude as it was the first time their mosque received sacrificial cattle from the president. “Alhamdulillah, President Prabowo donated a cow of such substantial weight,” he said, with locals subsequently nicknaming it “Gemoy” due to its large size.
