The escalating geopolitical situation and conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has generated widespread ripple effects globally. Although Indonesia is geographically distant from the conflict zone and remains relatively secure, the spillover consequences of this international situation could still impact the nation.

Consequently, President Prabowo Subianto has announced he will deliver a briefing to the Indonesian people in the coming weeks. He made this statement whilst inaugurating 218 bridges across Indonesia via online ceremony on Monday, 9 March.

“I will deliver a briefing to the entire Indonesian nation in the near future,” he said.

Through this briefing, the Head of State emphasised that the government does not intend merely to stand behind existing systems. Prabowo expressed commitment to confronting the difficulties created by the US-Israel-Iran conflict.

“We will not hide behind established systems. We face difficulties with resolve. We want to overcome challenges, not conceal them. We will not pretend that the Middle Eastern war presents no difficulties—we must be prepared to confront them,” Prabowo explained.

The spillover effects already becoming apparent following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran include skyrocketing global oil prices. Concurrently, the Indonesian rupiah weakened, breaching Rp17,000 per US dollar, though it closed slightly stronger at Rp16,935 per dollar in Monday’s trading.

A presidential briefing is a formal activity involving the transmission of directives, information, or explanations from the President to state officials, ministers, and institutional leaders.

Beyond encouraging restraint amongst all parties, Indonesia is also urging the rapid de-escalation of tensions and the pursuit of negotiated settlements through dialogue.

The intensifying geopolitical situation in the Middle East should serve as a serious warning to Indonesia to urgently strengthen its national energy independence.
