President Prabowo: The 8th President Will Commence the Giant Sea Wall Project

President Prabowo Subianto has announced that the Giant Sea Wall project, a massive sea barrier along the northern coast of Java, will soon begin construction. Prabowo, who is Indonesia’s 8th president, will initiate the project.

“This project will take 15 to 20 years to complete. It is a long time, and I do not know which president will inaugurate it. I am determined that the 8th president will start this project,” he asserted at the MPR/DPR RI Building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Friday (14/8/2026).

The Giant Sea Wall will be divided into 15 segments stretching from Banten to Gresik. It will take 20 years to complete the project.

“Whatever happens, we must be brave enough to start this, as it concerns the livelihoods of tens of millions of people living along the northern coast. We must remember what percentage of our industry is located in the northern coastal region, from West Java to East Java, so the future of our industry is also at stake,” he explained.

He also views the project as crucial for saving northern Java from the danger of coastal erosion.

“A large sea wall to secure the northern coast of Java is absolutely necessary. We must not wait for disaster to strike. We must learn from other countries, such as the Netherlands, which built long-term protective infrastructure without waiting for a disaster,” Prabowo stated.

“The Giant Sea Wall along the northern coast must be built immediately to serve as a protective belt,” he added.

Prabowo explained that the Giant Sea Wall’s function is not only to save northern Java from erosion but also to provide clean water and create new economic zones in Indonesia.

“To save tens of thousands of hectares that have already begun to sink due to rising sea levels. Furthermore, the Giant Sea Wall along the northern coast must become clean water infrastructure, a new growth corridor, and an engineering project by the nation’s own people,” he elaborated.
