President Prabowo Targets 30,000 Village Cooperatives to Operate Optimally by End of 2026
President Prabowo Subianto has set a target for 30,000 Koperasi Desa dan Kelurahan Merah Putih (KDKMP) to be operating optimally by the end of 2026.
He stated that the target was established to strengthen cooperatives as centres of the people’s economy while also reinforcing the role of micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) at the village level.
“Our target is 30,000 cooperatives operating optimally by the end of 2026. This is the target,” the President said during the Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives and the Regional Representatives Council (DPR-DPD RI) for 2026 at the MPR/DPR RI Building in Jakarta on Friday.
At present, 10,000 KDKMP are already operational. Of that number, 3,300 cooperatives are operating optimally, while the remainder are still in the adjustment phase.
According to him, a cooperative operating optimally means that all supporting facilities are available, from electricity and water to digital systems for centrally monitoring stock.
The cooperatives have also been able to function as offtakers or buyers of local agricultural and fishery produce.
In addition, the cooperatives have been equipped with their own transport facilities to haul community produce. The President considers these facilities important to prevent harvests from spoiling because they are not absorbed by the market or because no vehicles are available to transport them.
“There will no longer be harvests that spoil because no one buys them, because there are no lorries that can collect the harvest. Spoiled mangoes, spoiled rambutans, spoiled tomatoes, spoiled carrots — God willing, we can help our people optimally,” he said.
The President believes that building and strengthening village cooperatives is part of efforts to strengthen the people’s economy. He stressed that government targets must be set high so that the work carried out is also maximised.
He said that high targets will encourage all parties to work harder to achieve them. According to him, if targets are set too low, the results achieved also tend not to be optimal.
Prabowo emphasised that strengthening cooperatives is part of the government’s strategy to reinforce the foundations of the national economy, which rests on the community.
“Targets must be high, work hard, God willing we will get there. If I set a target of 12,000 cooperatives, we will end up with 11,000. If it is 30,000, we will end up with 29,000,” he said.
