Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend the peak of the 2026 National Labour Day commemoration, to be held at the National Monument (Monas) in Jakarta on Friday, 1 May.

“President Prabowo, God willing, is scheduled to attend the peak of the 2026 National Labour Day commemoration, which will be held at the National Monument in Jakarta,” said Head of the Indonesian Government Communication Agency (Bakom) RI Muhammad Qodari during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Qodari stated that the President’s presence is part of the government’s commitment to ensure that workers’ voices are not only heard but also addressed through tangible policies.

He emphasised that the government’s position is not against workers or labourers, but rather stands together with them. The state, he said, is present as a protector of workers and a guardian of job sustainability.

“The government wants to emphasise one thing: that the government’s position is not against workers or labourers, but rather stands together with the labourers. The state is present as a protector of workers and a guardian of job sustainability,” he said.

Qodari added that worker welfare and business world health are not conflicting matters, but rather two sides of the same goal.

According to him, a healthy business world is considered important to maintain job continuity and wage payments.

“If the business world is not healthy, it can’t pay salaries. And vice versa,” said Qodari.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Ministry of Manpower Cris Kuntadi said that this year’s International Labour Day or May Day commemoration carries the theme “Collaboration Together to Realise Industrial Progress and Worker Welfare”.

“And the tagline: one determination, one goal, prosperous together,” he said.

General Chairman of the All-Indonesian Labour Confederation (KSPSI), who was recently inaugurated as Minister of Environment Jumhur Hidayat, said he will still directly lead the convoy of tens of thousands of workers riding motorbikes in the May Day commemoration on 1 May 2026 in Jakarta.

“I myself plan to, since it’s a holiday, even if I’m inaugurated, on the holiday I will ride a motorbike leading those from Jakarta, around 40,000 workers on motorbikes,” said Jumhur at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Monday (27/4).

The labour activist who was just inaugurated as a minister stated his commitment to still take to the streets on 1 May.

Jumhur explained that the peaceful action will be centred in the Monas area. This year’s Labour Day momentum also serves as a means to celebrate several government policies that favour workers.

According to Jumhur, workers’ aspirations are now starting to be accommodated concretely by the state. One strategic step being prepared by the government is the formation of a Layoff Mitigation Task Force (Satgas) through a Presidential Decree (Keppres).

In addition to welfare issues, Jumhur also called for tightening regulations on outsourced or outsourcing labour. He hopes that improvements in labour regulations can realise justice for all workers in Indonesia.
