President Prabowo Orders Immediate Execution of Single National Identity Card
President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed his commitment to accelerating bureaucratic reform through the simplification of regulations and the digitalisation of government services.
This includes expediting the implementation of the Single National Identity Card as part of the transformation of governance.
Prabowo said Indonesia is on the right track in terms of development, but must continue to evaluate itself in order to improve the effectiveness of government.
He made the remarks during a Plenary Cabinet Session at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday, 20 July 2026.
“We are confident we are heading in the right direction, but we must also remain vigilant. We must correct ourselves, as we know our efficiency is still lacking. We have too many regulations, too many rules,” Prabowo said.
As a corrective step, Prabowo stressed the importance of simplifying the bureaucracy through the use of digital technology. He said the government is currently pioneering the digitalisation of governance through GovTech and various other digital transformation programmes.
“I want to make it clear here: we must simplify government. We are beginning, or have already begun, to move towards the digitalisation of government, with GovTech and other programmes,” he said.
Prabowo also expressed hope that the implementation of the Single National Identity Card can be realised soon, so that public services become more integrated, efficient and accessible to the public.
“I hope the single national identity card can be executed and implemented as well as possible. We will continue to simplify ministerial regulations and so on,” he stated.
In addition, Prabowo assessed that Indonesia already has a strong social protection system as a result of sustained development.
“One of our achievements is that we now have a social protection system which, in my view, is among the strongest in the world,” he said.
On the same occasion, Prabowo also emphasised that the country’s development achievements are the result of a relay of national leadership passed down by previous presidents. According to him, the task of the current government is to continue, build upon and perfect the foundations already laid.
“I have always acknowledged that this is a long march — from Bung Karno, from Soeharto, Megawati, Gus Dur, Jokowi — all of it is the result of our governments’ hard work. Our task is to build and improve upon it,” Prabowo concluded.
