President Prabowo Invites Germany to Invest in Critical Minerals and Rare Earths
President Prabowo Subianto has officially invited the German Government to expand its investment in various strategic national sectors. The primary focus of this cooperation is directed at the development of critical minerals and rare earth elements as a key pillar of the global energy transition. The invitation was conveyed by President Prabowo during a joint press statement with President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (15/6/2026). Prabowo emphasised that Indonesia and Germany have significant opportunities to deepen their partnership in future-oriented, sustainable sectors. “We invite Germany to participate in the supply chain for critical minerals and rare earths, as well as in our infrastructure development,” President Prabowo stated. During the meeting, President Prabowo explained that the industrial downstreaming policy remains a government priority. Indonesia is opening its doors wide for German technology and investment to process natural resources domestically, thereby creating high added value. The involvement of Germany, as a European economic and technological powerhouse, is expected to accelerate Indonesia’s economic transformation. This cooperation is anticipated to involve not just capital investment, but also significant technology transfer for the local workforce. Critical minerals and rare earths are vital components in the manufacturing of high-tech devices, ranging from smartphones and wind turbines to defence equipment. This partnership is viewed as strategic for both nations in reducing dependence on a single global supply chain. President Prabowo affirmed Indonesia’s commitment to creating a conducive investment climate for strategic partners. “Indonesia invites German parties to expand investment in important sectors to support clean energy targets and high-tech industries,” he concluded. The meeting also discussed strengthening cooperation in the fields of economy, investment, energy transition, energy security, education, and employment. President Prabowo also requested President Steinmeier’s support to accelerate the finalisation of the IEU-CEPA to boost investment. According to Steinmeier, the foundation of bilateral relations has been strengthened since the Jakarta Declaration in 2012.
