President Prabowo: Indonesia Has Great Capital to Achieve Energy Independence
President Prabowo Subianto has emphasised that Indonesia has great capital to realise energy independence through the optimisation of its national natural resources. He made the statement during a speech at the launch of B50 biodiesel in Karawang, West Java, on Thursday (9/7).
According to Prabowo, energy is a vital factor that determines the survival of a nation. He stressed the importance of managing domestic energy potential so that Indonesia no longer depends on supplies from other countries.
“Energy is vital for the survival of a nation. We are very grateful to God Almighty for giving us extraordinary blessings,” Prabowo said in his remarks.
Indonesia is recorded as having abundant energy reserves across various sectors, ranging from the world’s largest geothermal reserves to massive deposits of coal and natural gas. The President specifically highlighted the discovery of a new gas field in Andaman, which is considered to strengthen the prospects of national energy security, in addition to the great potential in the Masela Block, Natuna, and Kalimantan.
Beyond conventional natural gas, the President also highlighted the abundant potential of compressed natural gas (CNG), which has not yet been fully utilised. Currently, Indonesia still relies on imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), even though CNG reserves are available in almost all parts of the country.
“While we still import LPG, our CNG is very abundant. In Central Java, the use of CNG is already very extensive and we will continue this,” said President Prabowo.
Furthermore, the President revealed opportunities arising from technological developments that allow the utilisation of gas from deep coal seams. This innovation is expected to pave the way for Indonesia to exploit previously untapped resources to strengthen national energy sovereignty.
