President Prabowo expresses condolences to Iran over death of Khamenei
Sugiono delivered the letter of condolences to the Iranian Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, during their meeting in Jakarta.
“I delivered a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian to convey Indonesia’s deepest condolences over the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran,” the minister said in an official statement, as quoted here on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Sugiono and Ambassador Boroujerdi discussed the escalation of the situation in the Middle East due to the US and Israeli attacks on Iran which triggered Tehran’s retaliatory attacks on several points in the Persian Gulf.
Sugiono also emphasized the importance of respecting international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter, and urged diplomatic steps to reduce the escalation.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched a series of attacks on several Iranian targets, including in Tehran, with reports of damage and civilian casualties.
Iranian state television confirmed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the attacks.
Iran launched retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
The escalation in the region occurred amid ongoing nuclear negotiations in Geneva between the US and Iran, mediated by Oman.
Responding to the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, the Indonesian Government called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and expressed its readiness to facilitate dialogue to restore conducive regional conditions.
In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday (3/3), Sugiono stated he had communicated via telephone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East.
He also expressed the Indonesian Government’s desire to facilitate dialogue and mediation between the conflicting parties.
