President Pezeshkian Admits Communication Difficulties with Iran's New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei

President Masoud Pezeshkian has revealed that communication with Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is currently in a ‘very difficult’ state. Despite this, Pezeshkian emphasised that Mojtaba’s presence is a great source of strength for the country’s stability amid global pressure.

In a state television interview marking two years in office on Wednesday, Pezeshkian stressed the importance of officials being open in conveying matters to the Supreme Leader. He said such transparency would facilitate mutual understanding in running the government.

Pezeshkian praised Mojtaba Khamenei as an extraordinary leader, humble and with an impressive way of thinking. Mojtaba officially assumed the role of Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike in Tehran at the end of February.

On diplomatic relations, Pezeshkian highlighted the 14-point memorandum of understanding signed with US President Donald Trump on 17 June 2026. The Pakistan-mediated agreement includes a ceasefire, the lifting of a naval blockade, and a halt to active military operations that had escalated in the Gulf region.

However, the Iranian president accused internal parties of attempting to create divisions by politicising the Supreme Leader’s messages regarding the deal. He acknowledged that the current situation is the most difficult for Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, due to a combination of economic sanctions and military confrontation.

Security conditions deteriorated last month when the ceasefire agreement collapsed and both sides exchanged attacks for two weeks. Tensions only eased after President Trump abruptly halted the bombing, sparking reports of secret talks aimed at restoring long-term peace.
