President of Indonesia to Visit Japan and South Korea in Late March 2026
The President of the Indonesian Republic, General (Retired) Prabowo Subianto, is scheduled to undertake state visits to Japan and South Korea in late March and early April 2026. Prabowo will first travel to Tokyo before visiting Seoul.
The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that President Prabowo’s visit to Japan will take place from 29–31 March 2026. “During his visit to Japan, the President will make a state visit to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, and His Majesty will host a state luncheon in honour of the President. Ms Takaichi Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, will also hold a meeting with the President,” said the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as quoted in Jakarta on Saturday, 14 March 2026.
The visit to Japan marks the first meeting between Prabowo and Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in Tokyo. “President Prabowo’s visit will be a significant opportunity for both nations to further strengthen their comprehensive and strategic partnership. The Government of Japan welcomes President Prabowo’s visit with sincerity,” stated the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
For Prabowo, the visit to Japan is his second during his presidency. “This will be President Prabowo’s first official visit to Japan as President of Indonesia. Previously, the President visited the Osaka Expo 2025 in Kansai, Japan in September 2025 in a personal capacity,” said the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
After departing Tokyo, the Presidential aircraft will continue to Seoul. Prabowo is scheduled to be in South Korea from 31 March to 2 April 2026. His agenda includes holding a summit with President Lee Jae Myung on 1 April 2026 to discuss bilateral relations, according to a statement from the South Korean presidency on Friday, 13 March 2026.
For Prabowo, the visit to South Korea is his second during his presidency. He previously met President Lee when both leaders attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, South Korea on 1 November 2025, according to Yonhap reports.
