US authorities describe the unit as a “prison within a prison.” Washington (ANTARA) - Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is reportedly being held in a high-security cell in Brooklyn prison, United States, with stringent restrictions, according to a CBS News report on Thursday (26/3). Maduro has been placed in a special unit for high-risk inmates that enforces Special Administrative Measures (SAMs), which are restrictions on communication with the outside world. Authorities refer to the unit as a “prison within a prison.” He is only permitted to leave his cell for showers, meetings with his lawyer, or one hour of solitary recreation. All his activities are under strict 24-hour surveillance. Every movement within the unit is escorted by two correctional officers and one officer. This measure is implemented to ensure maximum security during his detention. Maduro is expected to remain in these conditions until the legal process is complete, whether he is released or sentenced, according to sources familiar with the case. The unit can accommodate up to 12 inmates, although the current number of occupants is unknown. His wife, Cilia Flores, is held in a different unit in the same facility. The report also mentions that former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández may have been placed in a similar unit before being transferred to another facility in West Virginia. Previously, the United States arrested Maduro and his wife in early January. The pair were brought to New York to face charges of alleged involvement in “narco-terrorism.”
