President Inaugurates University of the Republic of Indonesia Leadership, Deputy Defence Minister to Become Governor?

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The President of the Republic of Indonesia is scheduled to inaugurate the leadership of the University of the Republic of Indonesia (URI) at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon (22/7/2026) West Indonesia Time. The inauguration forms part of efforts to strengthen educational institutions.

URI is a new university established under the current government. According to information obtained by Republika, Marshal (Ret.) Donny Ermawan Taufanto, who currently serves as Deputy Defence Minister, is set to take up the post of governor.

Minister of State Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi said the inauguration is scheduled to take place at around 15:00 WIB, alongside the inauguration of the Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Sudaryono, who currently serves as Deputy Minister of Agriculture.

“There is one official who will also be inaugurated this afternoon, namely the leader of the University of the Republic of Indonesia,” Prasetyo said at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to Prasetyo, the establishment of the institution’s leadership is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen educational institutions to prepare future national leaders. He explained that the step aligns with President Prabowo’s directive emphasising the importance of preparing a cadre of leaders for future administrations.

“This is part of what the President has conveyed on many occasions. We want to strengthen institutions, especially educational institutions, to prepare future leaders of the nation,” said Prasetyo.
