Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto stated that he will strengthen the telecommunications network in Indonesia’s outermost regions during his visit to Miangas Island, Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi, on Saturday.

“We will also purchase school equipment for the children. Then there is strengthening the network so that handphones can operate here,” said President Prabowo Subianto during a dialogue with the community at SMK Negeri 2 Talaud in Miangas.

The President then called Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid, who accompanied him on the inspection to Indonesia’s northernmost island.

“She will provide handphones and Starlink for all households,” the President stated.

It is planned that 203 households on Miangas Island will receive this digital connectivity assistance. The government is preparing 180 Starlink modem units and 210 mobile phone units to ensure that communication and internet services can be enjoyed smoothly by the people of Miangas.

Not only communication devices, the President also handed over assistance in the form of a 15 gross tonnage (GT) fishing vessel so that it can be utilised to support the local community’s economy, accompanied by the construction of a Fishermen’s Village.

The establishment of the Fishermen’s Village will be equipped with ice-making facilities and cold storage, along with a special fuel filling location for fishermen.

President Prabowo arrived in Miangas on Saturday (9/5) after previously attending the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, on 7-8 May 2026.

Miangas Island is one of the outermost islands located at the northern tip of Indonesia and borders the Philippines.
