President Directs GBK Area to Become New Economic Growth Centre

President Prabowo Subianto has directed that the development of the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) area be carried out comprehensively and in an integrated manner to create a new centre of economic growth in Jakarta. The development will not only include the revitalisation of Hotel Sultan but also a complete redesign of the entire GBK area, which spans approximately 200 hectares.

This was revealed by Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) and Head of the Danantara Investment Management Agency, Rosan Roeslani, alongside several ministers of the Red and White Cabinet, after being summoned by President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (22/06/2026).

“The plan is to make it a new icon for Indonesia. It will be changed comprehensively, not just in the GBK area, but the entire area will be redesigned, from the golf course to the GBK area, which is approximately 200 hectares,” Rosan stated.

Rosan explained that the management of the area could involve several state-owned entities, including InJourney and Meru, once all administrative processes coordinated by the Ministry of State Secretariat are completed.

However, Rosan emphasised that the final concept for the area’s development is still being refined. He confirmed that the hospitality function will remain part of the area, albeit developed with a more comprehensive approach.

“There will certainly be hotels, and not just one. But the President’s message is to make this a new icon for Indonesia, so the planning must be done comprehensively and provide a real impact on the economy and, most importantly, on the Indonesian people,” he said.

Rosan added that the development of the GBK area also has the potential to strengthen the national sector. According to him, all facilities in the area will be upgraded to meet international standards.

“The GBK will still be there, but everything will be enhanced and perfected to a world-class standard, so that it can also provide a new economic centre in Jakarta,” he stated.

Furthermore, Rosan said that the development of the GBK area is part of an effort to boost the tourism sector as a new source of economic growth. The government will map out and prioritise tourist destinations with significant potential to be developed in an integrated manner. Tourism development will not only focus on increasing visitor numbers but also on the quality of the tourist experience and increasing tourist spending.

“So we can capture all layers of tourism, from the mass market to the high-end or experience-focused segment,” he concluded.
