Preserving Tradition: Mount Kelud Slope Residents Hold 'Coffee Wedding' at Plantation

A traditional leader guided a young couple carrying male (lanang) and female (wadon) coffee beans that had been symbolically wedded during the Temanten Kopi tradition at the De Karanganjar Coffee Plantation in Blitar, East Java, on Sunday (14/6/2026). The Temanten Kopi tradition is a ritual of selecting and picking the best male and female coffee beans, which are then ground together to signify the beginning of the harvest and coffee bean milling season. It is routinely performed by the coffee plantation community on the slopes of Mount Kelud as an expression of gratitude for a plentiful harvest and the good quality of the coffee beans. Residents alongside a foreign national participated in the traditional Temanten Kopi ceremony. A traditional leader was seen selecting and picking coffee cherries during the ritual.
