Preserving the Buka Luwur Tradition, Spreading Blessings Through Nasi Jangkrik

Residents received nasi jangkrik during the distribution at the tomb complex and Menara Kudus Mosque in Kudus, Central Java, on Thursday (25/6/2026). The distribution of nasi jangkrik was carried out at the peak of the Buka Luwur ceremony for the tomb of Sunan Kudus on the 10th of Muharram, with approximately 34,000 packets of rice wrapped in teak leaves and served with goat and buffalo meat. This was done as an expression of gratitude to God and to practice Islamic values of fostering a spirit of sharing with others. The committee for the Sunan Kudus Buka Luwur tradition slaughtered 22 buffaloes and 91 goats, and cooked around 9.1 tonnes of rice to prepare tens of thousands of nasi jangkrik portions. The Buka Luwur tradition of Sunan Kudus is an annual customary ceremony to replace the cloth covering the tomb (luwur) of Sunan Kudus, held every 10th of Muharram (Ashura).
