Jakarta – Amid intensifying competition in the labour market, students are expected to have not only strong academic records but also the skills needed to meet professional challenges. A grade point average (GPA) is one measure of achievement during university, but academic marks alone may not guarantee that graduates are ready to enter the workforce.

In addition to mastering the theory in their field, students need critical thinking, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. The ability to adapt and make decisions is also increasingly important as the workplace continues to change in response to technological developments and industry needs.

The challenge is that university education is not always easily aligned with labour-market demands. Students may master course material without necessarily having experience in addressing real-world problems. Education must therefore provide opportunities for students to develop skills while building character, integrity and concern for their social surroundings.

The quality of graduates depends not only on curricula and classroom teaching. Organisational experience, social activities and opportunities to learn from issues affecting communities can help students develop the thinking and attitudes needed in professional life.

The importance of equipping young people with these values was also highlighted at an event marking the centenary of Frans Seda, held under the theme “Empowering the Next Generation” at Atma Jaya Catholic University in Jakarta on Friday (9 October 2026). Using technology, the event invited young people to learn about Seda’s ideas and example, and to find new ways to carry on his legacy.

Frans Seda’s contribution to education was one of the topics highlighted at the event. He was one of the founders of Atma Jaya Catholic University in 1960. For Seda, nation-building was pursued not only through policy and leadership, but also through human development and education.

That legacy of thought continues to be carried forward through efforts to shape people who are knowledgeable, have integrity and care about society.

In his remarks, Atma Jaya Rector Prof. Dr Yuda Turana, Sp.S(K), urged attendees to see Frans Seda as a living example of the spirit of “For God and Country”. He said the centenary was not simply an occasion to remember the past, but an opportunity to revive that spirit of service through everyday choices and actions.
