Preparing Bill, MUI Proposes Replacing LGBT Term with LGSP
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUA) has proposed that the term Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) be replaced with LGSP, an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Sodomy, and Molestation.
Prof. KH Asrorun Niam Sholeh, Chairman of the MUI Fatwa Division, stated that this change is necessary because the term LGBT is viewed as a euphemism that fails to fully represent the substance of the issue. According to Niam, the current terminology may obscure public perception regarding moral deviations.
On this basis, the MUI has chosen the term LGSP to ensure the public understands that these acts are viewed as prohibited and criminal activities. He warned of the potential consequences of continuing to use euphemisms in the public sphere, noting that blurring the meaning could lead to moral deviations gradually being perceived as normal and eventually accepted as truth.
Consequently, Niam emphasised that MUI fatwas do not merely function as normative legal determinations, but also serve as instruments for social engineering and tools for building public awareness.
As a follow-up to this proposal, the MUI is currently preparing an academic paper and a Draft Bill (RUU) against LGSP. This document is planned to be submitted to the House of Representatives (DPR) and the government for further action.
“The MUI is proactively bringing this fatwa to life through regulatory strengthening. We are drafting the academic paper and the bill which, God willing, will be presented to the government and the DPR in the near future,” Niam said in a statement on Thursday, 30 July 2026.
He also referenced previous experiences where fatwas regarding pornography and pornoaction successfully served as the foundation for the Pornography Law. “Just as the fatwas on pornography and pornoaction in the past successfully evolved into the Pornography Law, the presence of this pioneering Anti-LGSP Bill is expected to serve as a legal fortress protecting the nation’s morality and social harmony,” he added.
