Premium Travel Trend: KAI Compartment Suite Passengers Surge by 79%
Travel habits among the public are shifting. Passengers are prioritising tranquil and comfortable journeys, making the travel experience itself part of an exclusive holiday. In line with this preference shift, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has recorded a surge in demand for its premium Compartment Suite service.
KAI’s luxurious service has attracted those seeking high privacy. Between January and April 2026, 16,315 passengers used the facility, reflecting a 79.35% increase compared to the same period in 2025, which saw 9,097 travellers.
This positive trend continues from last year’s performance. In 2025, Compartment Suite passenger numbers reached 42,118, a 47.80% rise from 28,496 in 2024.
Commenting on the phenomenon, KAI’s Vice President of Corporate Communications, Anne Purba, explained: ‘Public travel trends are shifting, with many customers seeking more comfortable journeys, private space during travel, and the ability to relax during the trip.’
She added that trains offer a complete travel experience. Passengers not only move from one place to another but also enjoy scenic changes—from rice fields and mountains to urban dynamics—relaxedly. For many travellers, the calm pace of train travel is ideal for reading, working, enjoying meals, or simply resting.
KAI’s private compartment concept maximises privacy. Cabins are designed with modern, elegant aesthetics. To enhance comfort, each cabin features electric ergonomic seats that recline up to 140 degrees.

Anne further stressed that the passenger increase reflects public awareness of travel quality. ‘Many customers want to enjoy the journey from departure. Trains offer a more comfortable, serene travel experience, allowing passengers to appreciate the scenery more freely,’ she added.
