Prediction of Peak Return Traffic on 29 March, 256,000 Vehicles Head to Jakarta
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The peak of the Lebaran 2026 return traffic is predicted to occur on Sunday, 29 March, with the number of vehicles heading to Jakarta potentially reaching around 250,000 units.
PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk President Director Rivan Achmad Purwantono stated that this figure is a projection based on vehicle movement trends observed in recent days.
This was conveyed by Rivan after the Joint Return Traffic Monitoring press conference in Bekasi, West Java, on Wednesday (25/3/2026).
He explained that in the previous peak return traffic period, the vehicle volume had reached around 256,000 units in one day.
This figure could recur if the vehicle flow distribution is uneven.
According to him, the interim prediction shows vehicle volume on 29 March in the range of 250,000 units.
Meanwhile, in the preceding days, the average vehicle movement was above 160,000 units per day.
Rivan added that on H+1 of Lebaran 2026, the number of vehicles recorded was around 171,000 units.
However, this figure does not entirely consist of long-distance return traffic, but also short-distance trips such as visits in the agglomeration area.
“Within these 171,000, there are visits leaving Jakarta, not just long-distance homecoming,” he said.
Rivan explained that the pattern of vehicle movement during return traffic generally occurs from afternoon to evening.
This differs from the outbound traffic during the fasting month, which tends to increase after dawn.
He also mentioned that there is still potential for additional vehicles on 30 March, although the peak return traffic is estimated to occur the day before.
“If you’re worried about returning on the 29th due to crowds, why not return on the 26th or 27th,” he said.
Additionally, drivers are asked to adjust their travel times according to their physical condition and to utilise available traffic information.
According to him, traffic movement data is shared openly with relevant parties and the public so it can be used as a reference in determining travel times.
