Prayer room and field used for classes after South Jakarta primary school collapse
A prayer room and the school field are being used for teaching activities at SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09 Pagi in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, following the collapse of the school building. Parent Evi Afrida said that since the incident, students have occasionally been taught in the musala and on the field. She noted there had been no prior suspicion the building would collapse, as it was an old structure that had only undergone minor repairs. “There was no suspicion, because it was an old building. The last work was just small repairs,” she said on Tuesday.
The school building collapsed on 27 November 2024 during heavy rain, coinciding with the DKI Jakarta regional election. Four classrooms and the school health unit were affected, though no one was injured. Since then, parents have grown increasingly concerned and are urging the DKI Jakarta provincial government to provide certainty over the reconstruction. Evi added that Quran recitation activities have also been postponed due to the lack of facilities. “We really hope the government will help rebuild the school so the children can learn comfortably and parents are not left feeling anxious,” she said.
