Pramono: Women Play Key Role in Reducing Number of Slum Neighbourhoods
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that women have played a role in reducing the number of slum Rukun Warga (RW) in Jakarta, from 445 RW in 2017 to 211 RW in 2026.
“Slum RW reduced to 211. Who contributed to that? Jumantik (larval monitors), PKK (family welfare empowerment), dasa wisma. And the spearhead of this is all women,” he said at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday.
This 52.58 per cent reduction in the number of slum RW represents an important achievement in efforts to improve residents’ settlement quality. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will continue to deepen data so that settlement arrangement programme interventions can be more targeted.
Pramono said that the handling of slum RW going forward will be prioritised in areas with high density, particularly West Jakarta and North Jakarta. Areas like Tambora are one of the focuses due to their high settlement complexity and the need for measured interventions.
Regarding the role of women in Jakarta, Pramono mentioned that they have contributed to the capital’s progress, evidenced by the economic growth of the capital city in the first quarter of 2026, which grew 5.59 per cent year-on-year.
“That wouldn’t be possible without the role of the women in the DKI Jakarta Regional Device Organisations (OPD). I am confident that compared to other provinces, the DKI Jakarta OPD has more women than elsewhere,” he said.
On that occasion, he conveyed that Jakarta’s Gender Development Index (IPG) in 2025 reached 95.5, one of the highest among provinces, indicating equal access to opportunities with men to contribute to development and improve quality of life.
Speaking of gender, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of DKI Jakarta reported that Jakarta’s Gender Inequality Index (IKG) in 2025 was recorded at 0.144, the lowest nationally at 0.402.
IKG measures inequality between men and women across three dimensions: reproductive health, empowerment, and participation in the labour market.
IKG ranges from 0 to 1. The smaller the IKG value, the lower the level of gender inequality, or the better the equality between men and women.
