Pramono: We Will Order Fences to be Removed After Installation

Several shopping malls in Jakarta have reportedly installed fences over the past few days. This has gone viral on social media, with speculation that the installations are linked to heightened tensions leading up to the month of August. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung also suspects that these measures were taken because mall management is concerned about the possibility of riots, similar to those experienced last year. “Regarding the installation of fences, I have also observed that this might be part of that concern,” he stated in the Blok M area, South Jakarta, on Friday (31/07/2026). Nevertheless, Pramono will request that the managers of these malls remove the fences, as excessive anxiety is detrimental to the wider public. “At the appropriate time, I will certainly ask for those fences to be removed again. Because excessive worry is also not good,” he said. Pramono stated that his administration will coordinate with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) to ensure that Jakarta remains secure, allowing the public to enjoy the city in a safe and comfortable atmosphere. He acknowledged that some parties are worried about riots occurring in Jakarta as they did in August last year, but he expressed confidence that such events will not recur. “Yes, there are concerns similar to August last year, but hopefully not. I am confident they won’t, I am confident they won’t,” he said.
